I have been looking for posts on toe ops and decided it might help someone at a later date if I start a blog about my looming date with the surgeon!

I'm having big toe joint fusion and next toe joint removed in a Stainsby procedure on 15th. Not really sure about the mechanics of it all but I will be sooooo relieved to be done with the hideous claw and outrageously painful alien blob on the top! I don't feel like I have got much information on the afterwards side of things so I'm going to ring the ward tomorrow to see what's what. This is my first op and I am quite nervous about the whole thing. Scared

Hello

I had similar op June 2012
Bunion & 2 toes.
Are you staying awake for the op?

Good luck.

Hi Ailsa,

Yep, I've had both great toes done in the past, one has now got a nasty 'spur' on the top of it
that could do with removing. The op has given me many years of pain free walking on my right foot but not
as good with my left foot.

Good luck

Hi Ailsa
Good luck next week and try not to be too nervous. I had a recent knee op and can honestly say there was no need to worry, but do let them know if you have any specific concerns. If you are going to be awake for the op, ask if you can use an I pod to help relax with your own choice of music.

Thankyou - good to hear that! I asked about being awake for the op but the nurse at pre-op said no, they are all routinely done under GA. I would have preferred to be awake - I read too many horror stories about people being awake but paralysed and unable to communicate!!

Jane - how were you afterwards? Not sure how I will manage stairs at first. Could you get about ok?

Good Luck for op.
About the stairs, quite literally one at a time. ie have both feet on one tread before trying the next one.

Good to heaven bad to hell ie better leg first going up, worse leg (foot) first going down.

You may find it easier going backwards down rather than sort launching into space!!

These are tips I have found useful over the years. Go at your pace.....Anne

Thanks Anne - that made me smile. I will remember that next week when i am ascending to my heaven (bedroom)!

Actually, I thought the whole thing was off yesterday, as I couldn't find my letter and rang the hospital. They said they had no record of me having an appointment next week. My immediate thought was "Oh no! I will have to go back to school!!" It made me realise how stressful work has been recently. Anyway, problem solved as they eventually realised they were looking for me on the outpatients lists!

I've been out today and treated myself to some new jamas for the occasion and have done some foot pampering - number 2 daughter made a comment about my hard skin bending the scalpel next week so I have soaked, pumiced and creamed to avoid embarrassment ... hope it has done the trick Blushing

Hi Ailsa
Glad it's all done now and hope you get well soon Keep up with those painkillers for as long as you need to- don't try to be too brave!

As for the disappearing posts, it happens to me ALL the time!! And it is so annoying! I find if you post using the "Quick Reply" option on the bottom left of the page, they don't disappear, you just can't use the 'smilies'

Sending hugs

glad it's done Ailsa,

wishing you all the best for a speedy recovery.

as for the disappearing post i remember that happened to me once, yes it would be a long one,

not that i write long posts now really but a good idea is to write it in an email and then copy it onto here in the thread, don't know whether we get timed out? Paul being the techno kid might know .. lolBigGrin

anyway back to the plot,

let's know how you are as and when you can.

No, the forum doesn't time out. If you have a long thread to post then the idea of using another program to construct it is a good one. However, you should be aware of some potential pitfalls. The main one is that if you use a word processor, or email client you may well find that when you paste the result into the forum you get some odd results. e.g. spacing between paragraphs is lost or becomes very wide, or text attributes such as bold and italics don't work.

To avoid this, I recommend you use a very simple text editor. Windows users should look for a program called notepad. Assuming you have Windows 7 you can press the start button and start typing notepad.exe. Windows will bring up some search results, one of which will be the notepad.exe file which you should select. In Win 8 just switch to the start tile screen and start typing.

Apple product users - sorry can't help - I am not an Apple fan. But there will be an equivalent feature somewhere

Thank you for your kind thoughts. The foot is much more bearable now and I can distinguish between the stitches, the wire and the tight plaster pains so that is progress. It's still painful to have it down after more than a couple of minutes but as long as it is elevated it is ok.

I could get used to lying around being waited on! I've completed some patchwork I started during the Olympics,! I tried to download a "how to crochet" doc but ended up in a right pickle with a browser hijacker which took over everything, Had to get the school IT techs to reconfigure it so had better be careful before doing that again!

I might try to go downstairs in the morning. I'm ready for a new challenge! I will keep you posted, xx Ailsa

Just an update about my 2 new best friends - a memory foam V pillow and memory foam undulating leg wedge! The wedge is brilliant and allows me to still be able to sleep on my favourite side without worrying about catching the toe wires. They were dear - £30 and £40 respectively, but have been well worth the money and have enabled me to get comfortable in bed or on the sofa. I think the leg wedge would be fantastic for restless legs which I get from time to time.

I'm still needing 4 lots of cocodamol/tramadol per day but think it is progressing ok. Smile xx Ailsa

Glad to hear that you're getting more comfortable. Don't worry about the frequent doses of pain meds. If you need them you must have them

Hello - well I have made it downstairs in the morning today for the first time. I had a lot off oozy stuff seep through on Tues after being more mobile so i had a really lazy day yesterday. I can't believe how much effort it takes to move with the crutches. Even standing gives me a stitch in my back and my leg muscles feel like they have descended Everest!

I got my letter to go for stitches out on Monday. I am fairly certain I won't enjoy that. Blink I'm quite excited to see what my foot will look like though as even with the cast and bandage I can see that the big toe is straight. Maybe I will be able to wear sandals again once the other foot is done. I have been too embarrassed for years to show my toes to anyone. Blushing

Hope everyone is enjoying a little bit of sunshine xx Ailsa
